File Under, Research I Can’t Use

Awhile back I posted a gross yet interesting thing from my Aztec Dance Tunes’ research that I couldn’t use. Here’s another remarkable tidbit of unusableness from an interview with Christopher Faraone about Ancient Greek love magic:

The other thing that struck me about these spells is that they are used by men to inflict great pain and suffering on women, but the men want the pain and suffering to stop when the women arrive at their door. Thus a common formula reads something like this: "Burn, whip, torture the heart, the liver, the body of Ms. X, until she leaps from her home and comes to me, Mr. Y." The assumption of the users of these spells is that these women are not going to make love to them or even look their way unless some supernatural torture is applied to them to force them to come. One of the ideas that I explore in my book is that you have the same kind of assumption and the same application of force in a certain type of marriage in the Greek world called bridal theft, or abduction marriage, a form of kidnap or elopement that was still practiced in Greece and the Balkans even in the 1950s. In more traditional places where a man was interested in a woman and there’s no way for them to get together–maybe she’s from a higher socioeconomic bracket–he might get a bunch of his buddies together and kidnap her. In some cases, however, he might do this with the tacit agreement of her parents, who might be glad to forgo the expense of a wedding or a dowry. There is not enough evidence for me to actually prove this, but I suspect that erotic spells were a kind of supernatural form of abduction marriage. That’s the sociological frame, but when you’re working in the ancient world there are no certainties because we don’t have a lot of good evidence even for this kind of marriage.

Of course, maybe I’ll use some of it in the next one… in which I will definitely be modeling the heroine’s father sorta, kinda on Professor Faraone himself. An idea of great joy.

VeronicaMarsTalk

And tonight’s installment sez:

My Big Fat Greek Rush Week. Veronica (Kristen Bell) is hired by the campus newspaper to do an undercover expose on the Zeta Theta sorority sisters during rush week to investigate Parker’s (Julie Gonzalo) rape. Throughout the investigation, Veronica realizes that everything is not exactly what as seems in the sorority house. Meanwhile, Logan (Jason Dohring) and Wallace (Percy Daggs III) participate in a prisoner/guard role-playing experiment for their Sociology class, which challenges them psychologically. Enrico Colantoni, Tina Majorino, Ryan Hansen, Francis Capra and Chris Lowell also star. John Kretchmer directed the episode.

Oh, sorority girl humor. I can’t wait. (Oh, and the description for next week’s episode is up too.)

Late Roman Empire-esque Excesses, the Joy of

One word: AWESOME:

Let’s cut the jibber-jabber and highlight one new show that knows exactly what it is. “I Pity the Fool” (9 p.m. Wednesday, TV Land) is Mr. T’s new venture into the genre of “reali-T,” and on his show, Mr. T uses his patented, energetic brand of motivation and problem-solving to help families and businesses in trouble. It’s a surprisingly sweet and gently diverting bit of fluff, and it doesn’t take itself too seriously.

Somewhere Dirk Benedict is crying. (And not about that whole thing with his testicles and cancer either.)

p.s. Speaking of TV, did anyone else notice that Project Runway totally stole the Elle spread from ANTM? And that whole batshit crazy judging from last week where Tyra and the judges* did some sort of Pray Out the Girl Faux Gospel Number, inspired — appropriately enough — by the nuttiest girl (maybe) ever? Scariest thing I’ve ever seen.

*The guest judge looked like maybe he would run, except he had nowhere to go.

**Why, yes, I have been on a TV bender since our return from N.C. last evening; why do you ask?

One Song: “Put a Penny in the Slot”

"Put a Penny in the Slot," Fionn Regan – Whatever I could say about this number, Sean at Said the Gramophone already said better. (He’s probably my favorite music writer at the moment, except maybe this guy.) Anyway, Paul Auster’s Timbuktu, Bellow’s Augie March, stealing strange things from your ex-lover — all woven into the intricate, beautiful, melodic lyrics here. I’ve been burned by folk and folkish music so many times that it takes quite a bit to wake me up when I hear that sound. I think it took one listen of this song, when it came up on random play in the car. About two-thirds of the way through there’s this lovely break and the line "She will not let you be her lover," drawn out slow and I realized this is an amazing song. An amazing singer.

VeronicaMarsTalk

This is probably all from me today, unless it isn’t, because I’m a busy worker bee. Writing through cold, &tc. Please, please, please tune in to Veronica Mars tonight, even if you’ve never watched it before. You’ll love it, I promise, and the next few episodes look to be the show’s last chance to grab an audience and stay alive*. Tonight’s ep description is:

Welcome Wagon. Veronica (Kristen Bell) is in true form from the moment she and boyfriend Logan (Jason Dohring), along with close friends Wallace (Percy Daggs III) and Mac (Tina Majorino), set foot on the campus of Hearst College. Wallace enlists Veronica’s help when his new roommate, Piz (Chris Lowell), has all his belongings stolen. While working on Piz’s case, Veronica learns that the campus serial rapist has struck again. Meanwhile, Keith (Enrico Colantoni) runs into trouble while transporting a recently released convict across the country to reunite him with Kendall (guest star Charisma Carpenter, “Charmed”).

Drop by after with your thoughts. (I’m probably not going to post a Gilmore thread, though like the idiot I am, I’ll likely watch since it’s on right before VM and I’m sick; so feel free to jump in with GG thoughts. If it’s an actual decent episode I’ll post a thread for it after the fact.)

*Yes, Kristen Bell will DIE if you do not watch. Why would you want to hurt Kristin Bell?

A Little Something Wonderful

Said the Gramophone has a new Beirut song, "Elephant Gun":

"Elephant Gun" is totally terrific, and at a time where Beirut hype is already cliche, when backlash is heatin’ up the manifestos, it’s a reminder of just why Zach was exciting us in the first place. This isn’t so much gypsy music so much as music to make us sedentary indie rock kids feel like tumbleweeds; to make us feel like we’re shaking dust off our jackets, and into our shoes; to make us feel like yeah we’re on our way somewhere, you and i; just take my hand.

Boy, do I want that EP.
