The really sad part is many of these tragedies could have been avoided if they had been wearing a dog life jacket. It is a common misconception that all dogs are good swimmers. As a matter of fact there are some breeds that are not good swimmers at all. And even dogs that are good swimmers can get into trouble. If they run out of enerby while in the water unlike humans dogs do not know how to float so instead they will sink. Also older dogs can tire real easy and end up in trouble. So basically the moral of the story is if you are going to have your dog in or near water you should have them wearing a dog life jacket.
